The horror genre is undeniably a favorite among audiences and the demand for these productions never goes out of style. However, Hollywood faces a lack of creativity when creating new stories, thus choosing to capitalize on audiences’ interest and nostalgia in reliving the same storylines of beloved franchises. This phenomenon drives the production of a series of remakes of classics of the genre, satisfying the desire of viewers for familiar elements.
Below, we’ve handpicked 5 remakes of horror classics.

sigh (2018)
The remake of “Suspiria” retains the classic 1977 film, directed by Dario Argento, only the name, the plot involving witchcraft and the dance academy as the main setting.
Otherwise, the works are completely different. The remake traded the original’s bright colors and fairytale-like atmosphere for desaturated and dark tones in a realistic aesthetic.
The new version deals with political themes, setting the story in West Berlin and exploring historical events.
Dead Evil (2013)

Evil Dead is a cult franchise of trash horror. The original trilogy, directed by Sam Raimi and starring Bruce Campbell, was a milestone in the genre.
In 2013, a remake of the first film was released. With different characters, the plot follows the same premise: a group of young people who find the Book of the Dead in a cabin in the woods and inadvertently release a demonic force that possesses them.
After such a long time, a series continuing the original trilogy and a new independent sequel has been launched, released in 2023.
Poltergeist (2015)

Directed by Tobe Hooper, written and produced by Steven Spielberg, the 1982 classic “Poltergeist” was very successful at the time and spawned two more sequels in the 1980s.
In 2015, a remake was released that does not deviate much from the plot of the original film: a family who moves into a new house in the suburbs that is haunted by evil spirits.
The new version updates the story for the new days, including using technological advancements such as cell phones, drones, and LED TVs.
Child’s Play (2019)

The popular Chuck doll franchise includes the classic trilogy, two more comedic and metalinguistic sequels, and two other features that go back to the origins.
In 2019, a remake of the 1988 original was released, with an updated approach to current technologies and a focus for the new generations.
The film makes changes to Chucky’s origin: the spirit of a killer transferred to the doll through a satanic ritual is transformed into a toy robot that acquires a homicidal personality due to a programming error.
Hell Raiser (2022)

The Hellraiser franchise began in 1987 with “Hellraiser – Reborn from Hell”, written and directed by Clive Barker, based on a novel by his own authorship. The film introduced the Cenobites, extradimensional beings who explore extreme pain and pleasure, with emphasis on the “Pinhead” figure.
The series had 9 sequels and a reboot was released in 2022 focusing on the puzzle cube and the mythology of the Cenobites, but it doesn’t tell the same story as the first film.
