If he becomes ineligible, Bolsonaro will avoid launching an ally for 2026, the paper says

The “political survival” strategy is expected to follow in Lula’s footsteps in 2018

If former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) becomes ineligible by the Superior Court (TSE), allies of the politician underline that the strategy adopted will be to keep him in the running, avoiding naming a successor and exhausting the possibility of minute appeals until the last minute .

The information was disclosed by journalists Carolina Linhares and Joelmir Tavares, in the newspaper Folha de São Paulo. Bolsonaro’s trial at the TSE begins this Thursday 22.

Bolsonarist politicians strongly believe in the conviction for abuse of political power, which allegedly took place during a meeting with ambassadors in July last year at Palazzo Alvorada. At the time, Bolsonaro made serious allegations against the Brazilian electoral system without evidence.

no successor

While a conviction paves the way for other right-wing names to rise in the 2026 election race, this alternative should not be chosen by Bolsonaro’s headquarters. This is because, according to sources, working on a new name could deplete the former president’s political capital.

The discourse to be used must be that there is still time to reverse the decision and to participate in the elections, just as President Lula did in 2018, when he changed his candidacy for that of Fernando Haddad (PT) only when all alternatives were have already been exhausted.
