Newly arrived in João Pessoa, Paraíba, Marcos Vinícius wants to inspire as many people as possible with music
The artist Marcos Vinícius Previato de Lima, 24, uses the beaches of Pipa (RN), João Pessoa, Cabedelo and Conde (PB) as his photographic studios.
Born and raised in Jaçanã, in the north of São Paulo, the photographer started working early, at the age of 14, in a wholesaler. “I hated working there, it felt small, like there was something more to me,” he says.
At the age of 16, Marcos became acquainted with the rap and reggae soundsystem movements, creating great admiration for them. At the Jaçanã Culture Factory, the young man understood that he could earn a living with art and took courses in graffiti, singing, literature and capoeira.
When he discovered the Film Creation Institute, which aims to technically qualify young people from the periphery who want to work with the audiovisual sector, a great opportunity has presented itself. Near the end of his course, Marcos was called to work as a rookie audiovisual technician in the series “Tuning”, produced by KondZilla in collaboration with Netflix.
It was during this time that the young man made several contacts with people in the area, including location producer Lucas Delgado, who gave him his first professional camera.
At the same time as he managed to occupy an elitist space, Vinícius ended up running into drugs, which led him to a depression he didn’t even know he had. With the sadness he felt and the injustices of the world of cinema, he decided to throw in the towel, leaving behind everything he built in São Paulo.
Backpacking across the country to hostels and farms, the young man gathered all his energy in March 2021 and traveled to the northeast to volunteer at a campsite, where he stayed for about four months. Then he decided to try something different, use the camera that was given to him for work.
“I try to convey a sense of freedom to people, when I take photos on the beach I always address the issue of self-esteem, especially with women who have difficulty with their bodies,” she comments.
“The choice of scenarios is 100% spontaneous and momentary. I say my boss is nature, I always depend on the wind, sun and also the tide to find the best scenery, she dictates it,” she adds. Marcos tries to bring the truth into his photographs, creating beautiful memories for his clients.
Musical career
While photographing beaches, restaurants, weddings and events, Marcos also tries to focus on his music career. Just arrived in João Pessoa, Paraíba, the young man is pursuing his dream.
“I’ve always produced independently, the beats, the compositions, the recordings. I’m currently producing an album with seven songs, made entirely with my mobile phone, which will be called ‘Mistério’. We just need faith to do what we want.”
By identifying with rap and reggae, the need to express one’s ideas became more intense. “I was more of a writer than a photographer. I feel like now I think I can say something about life too,” Marcos said.
“My goal is not to get huge views, but to inspire as many people as possible.”
And speaking of inspiration, another major project in his life has given him a more positive outlook on the world and on life: being a father. “Today my biggest inspiration is my son to come.”
And if there are difficulties, he takes it as a joke. “I’ve always tried to deal with difficulties in a comical way. For me, in the end, life is a game and difficulties are just part of the playground.”
