82-year-old artist is honored in an exhibition in Salvador


Prentice Sacramento de Carvalho, from the suburbs of the capital, master tile painter, lives and produces in a large house



With an art career spanning six decades, the famed artist Apprentice Sacramento de Carvalho82 years old, he is awarded at the 5th edition of the ANTÔNIOS – a Tribute to Saint Anthony exhibition, open to the public at ME Ateliê da Fotografia, in Salvador.

Composed of photography, painting, woodcuts, drawing, watercolors and ceramics, the exhibition brings together 41 works by 39 national and international artists, highlighting the unique contribution of the laureate to the art world, particularly in tile painting.

Prentice Sacramento de Carvalho lives in Rua Porto dos Tainheiros, in Ribeira, located in the peninsula of Itapagipe, Cidade Baixa, on the outskirts of Salvador. The artist discovered his passion for tile painting while still at school. Over time he improved his technique and developed his own style.

His works portray landscapes, religiosity, orixás, churches and the emblematic Bahian acarajé. Inspired by the everyday scenes of Salvador, the city where he was born and lives, the artist tries to capture the beauty and culture of his native land.

Salvador is Prentice’s inspiration

“My biggest inspirations are everyday scenes, which I observe from childhood till today. I am very impressed by the beauty and culture that reigns in our city and these aspects are what I try to portray. I developed my style by teaching myself, experimenting, learning from mistakes and doing it right,” she says.

Throughout his career, he has faced challenges, such as being recognized in his own city. “As hard as I’ve worked for 60 years, there are still people who discover and are amazed by what I do. This also happens when people admire my works, without knowing their authorship,” Prentice points out.

Although the name is not always associated with artistic productions, Prentice’s works are present on the facades of houses, religious temples, hospitals and streets in Salvador. The best known are the paintings of the Santo Antônio Hospital (Obras Sociais Santa Dulce), the Casa de Iemanjá, the Quinta dos Lázaros Cemetery and the Pelourinho.

The artist lives in a house filled with art

The choice of Prentice Sacramento de Carvalho as an honored artist in the ANTÔNIOS exhibition underlines not only the recognition for his work, but also the importance of his works in the history of local art and the inspiration of other artists, such as Mário Edson, curator of the exhibition.

He also discovered and fell in love with Prentice, honoring him. According to Edson, “those who pass by Avenida Mem de Sá, sometimes without paying attention, cannot imagine the wealth preserved in the large house number 70, with an aged appearance, but of singular beauty, where Prentice Sacramento lived and produced for 44 years . The mansion intertwines with his art and the story of him, they complement each other.”

An artist named Prentice

The artist’s name comes from the English language, it means “the apprentice”. In recent years he has produced and grown as a messenger, a master. “His tiles are a piece of Bahia,” says Mário Edson.

At the age of 82, Prentice Sacramento de Carvalho is dedicated to leaving a cultural legacy for future generations. His studio, located at Rua Porto dos Tainheiros, 70, in Ribeira, receives visitors every day. They admire the works and enjoy the artist’s stories.

“I feel honored to be honored by another artist who has discovered my work and I see this tribute as a way to perpetuate my contribution to the history of art,” concludes Prentice Sacramento de Carvalho with satisfaction.
