Everything was set for a second season, but HBO decided to ruthlessly cancel the sci-fi horror series

Produced by Jordan Peele, Lovecraft Country set out to offer a series with an original tone that combined human drama, politics, fantasy and horror. A true TV Alien, the show was eventually canceled after a 10-episode season when Season 2 was already in production. Explanations.

Lovecraft’s country takes place in 1950s America. A certain Atticus Black (Jonathan Majors) sets out to find his father with the help of his friend Letty (Journey Smollett) and Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance). Except their path will be littered with fantastical monsters… and very real ones.

The series takes its title (and its monsters) from the world of HP Lovecraft, who is considered a major author of fantasy, science fiction and horror, but who we also know was deeply racist and anti-Semitic. The series portrays the character of Atticus as a fan of Lovecraft to better suspect these facts.

When it came out, Lovecraft Country was very well received by critics, but it didn’t have an immediate audience. In its final episodes, it achieved a very respectable score, garnering several Emmy Award nominations along the way.

All this failed to save: in 2021, HBO canceled the series while the second season, which was to be called Lovecraft Country: Supremacy, was in production.

We will not be renewing Lovecraft Country for a second season. We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of this talented team and Misha Green, who created this groundbreaking series. And thanks to the fans for joining us on this adventure.

According to several sources DeadlineThe cancellation was apparently due to the fact that Season 1 was based on Matt Ruff’s work, while Season 2 was an entirely original creation that didn’t make it to the cable network.

Already officially canceled, designer Misha Green took over Social networks to reveal what he envisioned for Season 2.

The episodes were to take place in the New World (with the shape of the USA) divided into four parts: the tribal nations of the West, the white lands, “The New Negro Republic” (New Negro Republic VO) and “Jefferson of the Commonwealth”.

The idea was that the White Lands had been invaded by zombies and that Season 2 would focus on a new generation of heroes alongside the “old” generation represented by Letty and Atticus. Unfortunately, fans will probably never find out the fate of this new world or their characters.
