The Worst Hero? DC itself chops down firewood in Green Lantern in Flash HQ

The Green Lantern is known as a great cosmic protector, but DC Comics themselves say he doesn’t play a good role as a hero.

In DC Comics, some of the most iconic heroes are known for having strong ties to their cities. Batman with Gotham City, Superman with Metropolis (and Smallville), Flash with Central City, Green Arrow with Star City, and Green Lantern with Coast City. But, in the case of the latter example, the same editor “turns the woods down” on Hal Jordan by criticizing him as a bad protector.

Before we get to DC’s “public criticism” of Green Lanterns, especially Hal Jordan, it is necessary to recall a little the relationship between the hero and his hometown. Jordan called Coast City (referencing real-life Los Angeles) “home” for the first time Showcase #22since 1959. Since then, he has never had so much influence in his stories, until the early 1990s.

After Death of Supermanin 1992, different versions of Superman tried to become the “official” one, while the real one was missing in the saga kingdom of supermen. And, in 1993, a conflict between the Cyborg Superman and Mongul destroyed Coast City, leaving Hal Jordan devastated and, gradually, paranoid.

Devastated by the loss of his city and loved ones, Jordan proceeded to recreate them from constructs spawned by his Green Lantern ring. Gradually, this drove him insane, until he destroyed the Green Lantern Corps and became the villain Parallax—let’s leave that whole story for another day.

Back to Coast City: Having been at the center of the storyline that changed the Green Lanterns, the city, after being rebuilt, had just one more notable moment in Hal Jordan’s life during the War of the Ringsin 2008. When Sinestro and his troops attempted to invade and destroy Coast City, Jordan and other Lanterns urged the citizens to evacuate the city.

In a poignant moment, not a single citizen left Coast City, lighting a green light in their homes in support of Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps. But…after that moment, we have seldom seen Jordan himself or any other Emerald Gladiator devote himself to this city that has suffered so much – and never failed to support them, even after it was destroyed and was in danger of being destroyed again. devastated .

How did DC itself criticize Green Lantern as “the worst hero”?

Now yes, returning to the story of a new edition of The flashwhich recently hit newsstands, a storyline moment shows the “efficiency” of Hal Jordan or other Green Lanterns as protectors of Coast City.

Spoiler alert for The Flash #800!

the plot of The flash #800 shows several low-income and fifth-rate villains playing poker, while discussing the heroes who protect the various cities of the DC Universe, such as Gotham City, Metropolis, Central City, among others. In between comments, they discussed what was “the best place to act,” i.e. where they feel most comfortable committing crimes, since police and hero work leave something to be desired.

They quickly dismissed Gotham City and Metropolis, but cited Coast City as the easier target for one simple reason: the city’s hero is never really there.

If it’s any relief to Jordan, his primary duties as a Green Lantern require him to leave Coast City and immediately report to the Corps when called upon. In recent years, some writers have even tried to keep the hero in their town for a while, as Jordan keeps getting pushed out of society. But the character’s very impulsive nature takes him out of where he was born.

Jordan should be more present on Earth, and in Coast City, new phase in which it must be in Sector 2814, due to a cosmic quarantine. And, after this “hard”, maybe the hero will find a way to better protect the place where he was born and raised, right?
