Set in a black law firm in Chicago, the legal drama The Good Fight hit the small screen shortly after the election of Donald Trump. The series also opens with the surprise of its heroine Diane Lockhart – played by the divine Christine Baranski – on the night of the results.
Few shows have rooted their opposition to the Trump presidency as deeply as The Good Fight. After her fortune is swallowed up in a Ponzi scheme, Diane quickly finds a new impetus in the law and decides to use it as a means of justice, hence the first credits, which reflect the paraphernalia of her former existence – luxury handbags, bottles of wine and conference phones, and most recently the ex-President Images – blown up in slow motion.
For six seasons, The Good Fight has proven to be the only series capable of highlighting with incredible humor and precision the surreal nature of Trump’s presidency and the consequences that follow from his departure from the White House. Screenwriters Robert and Michelle King seemed to like it, for example, introducing a character that strongly evokes Roy Cohn (played by Michael Sheen), a lawyer famous for the McCarthy witch hunt, despite being gay himself.pisgate“President.
But The Good Fight was also remarkably introspective, always questioning the limits of Diana’s feminism, forged only in her own experiences, especially in a predominantly black workplace. A theme that has become more relevant in the Trump years, when black, trans and other minority women have seen their basic rights threatened and, for some, simply revoked.
Despite being a staunch ally of those threatened by Trump’s presidency, Diane has repeatedly had to question her own privilege. And this, always with subtlety and without the moralizing side. The complexity and intelligence of the series is also expressed through the marriage of Diane and Kurt (Gary Cole), part of the conservative Republicans. Their love story was one of the best illustrated on television in recent years.
The Good Fight is the latest series to look America square in the eye. It emphasizes all its flaws, all its shortcomings, but never loses hope for a more just and harmonious society. Overall, it’s a very good series.
You have until July 5th to catch The Good Fight on Prime Video.
