The filmmaker praised Seu Jorge’s work in “reinventing” David Bowie’s songs in the film A Vida Marinha with Steve Zissou

The filmmaker and the singer worked together on the film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004), in which the Brazilian played the character Pele dos Santos and re-recorded songs from David Bowie for the soundtrack.
In an interview with NME during the Cannes Film Festival, the filmmaker recalled the partnership with Your Jorge: “In the script, we describe the character singing a song from the David Bowie in Portuguese. But when it came time to film, we realized that we wanted Your Jorge singing 12 songs from bowie in Portuguese, so we interspersed their participation in the entire film. That was great.”
Anderson revealed that the musician did not know some of the Camaleão do Rock tracks chosen for the film, but still “took control of the situation! He reinvented these tracks from the David Bowie that he didn’t know – he had never heard it, so he made his own versions.”
“I didn’t realize something until halfway through filming: I thought he just translated the lyrics into Portuguese! But he completely rewrote them. So I’d ask, ‘What are you singing?’ I had no idea what it meant, until today I don’t know everything, it was much more abstract than I imagined. But he was wonderful,” the director added.
Your Jorge also participated in the latest film by Wes Andersonthe starry asteroid city. The feature film is scheduled to premiere in Brazil on August 10 of this year.
