The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has decided to change some criteria for films to qualify in the Best Picture category at the Oscars. According to information from THR, among the main new requirements is that, starting in 2024, films must play longer in US theaters.
As THR pointed out, the change shouldn’t affect big productions, but it will certainly affect original films streaming, as well as independent distributors and foreign films seeking nominations in major categories.
In 2022, for example, Apple managed to take home not just one, but three figurines with the acquired rights of At the rhythm of the heartincluding the most coveted category, that of Best Picture, because the company has decided to invest $ 1 billion a year in films destined for theaters.
