Back pain marked the first symptoms of the health problem that would cause Leandro’s death, Askins tumor, a type of chest cancer, on April 19, 1998. That same month, he traveled to the United States to undergo tests and she subsequently began treatment with chemotherapy.
The disease was overwhelming. Less than two months after his diagnosis, the singer couldn’t resist. On June 15, she suffered a cardiac arrest in his apartment. He was even revived and taken to intensive care at São Luiz hospital, in São Paulo, where he was sedated after a generalized infection. They were already the last moments of his life.
Leandro died on June 23, 1998, the same day that the Brazilian team lost a match against Norway in the World Cup held in France. About 300,000 people followed his vigil and coffin procession to the cemetery where he was buried in the city of Goiânia.

Even with a short stint in Brazilian music, Leandro made a name for himself. Among the great successes of the duo, which lasted from 1983 to 1998, are sertanejo classics such as Ebetween Tapas and Kisses, Sorry but I’m about to cry, Think of me, I haven’t learned to say goodbye, I swear (version of I swear), Sonhador and Cumade AND Friend (the last two on an album released after Leandro’s death).
