Abandoning the cops to their fate jeopardizes the final frontier between crime and law
With increasing frequency we witness incredulous attacks by citizens, criminals and otherwise, against the forces of order. The situation is worrying! The police, in charge of the use of state force, have the task of preventing and investigating crimes; and for the exercise of their functions, they use the means necessary for approaches and arrests.

However, the confrontation scenes with the agents are more and more frequent, due to several factors. Among them, the lack of state support stands out, the view of the police officer as an enemy, as well as teratological judicial decisions – one of them recent, in which an attempted murder against an employee of the civil police of Rio Grande do Sul, at the moment served an arrest warrant, was considered by the Justice a “crime of resistance”, of lesser gravity.
Added to these factors is the dismantling of the security forces, devalued and demolished for decades with low wages and insufficient infrastructure. Well, the policeman is first and foremost a human being! There is no sanity that can resist in such an arid scenario. No wonder the number of suicides among police officers has increased exponentially.
When the government abandons its policemen, when the population turns its back on its protectors, society as a whole suffers. We know that the same police activity – essentially repressive, but also guarantor of rights – provides a prejudiced view to the detriment of police officers. But that doesn’t mean subjecting these pros to the different attacks and clashes we’ve seen.
In São Paulo, the position of the current Police Command stands out, which in events involving possible deviations, both in approaches and in arrests, is careful to guarantee defense until the end of the investigation of the facts. In proven situations of error, the rigor of the law is maintained, safeguarding the batter’s right to full defense.
Confronting, swearing or attacking police officers cannot be accepted. There is an urgent need for a state counterpart to protect its servants, on pain of succumbing to the last frontier between crime and law.
