President Lula was once close to Daniel Ortega and tried to avoid stronger criticism of the dictator
OR Brazil agreed to sign a document of the OAS (Organization of American States) who criticizes the government of Nicaragua due to human rights violations. The organization’s Brazilian team signed the document on Friday 23, during the 53rd General Assembly, which was held in Washington, United States.
The document drawn up at the OAS calls for the Central American country to “stop all human rights violations and respect civil and political rights”.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva he was once close to the dictator of Nicaragua, Daniele Ortega, and has always dodged the strongest criticisms of the sovereign.
The government has already commented on the case in multilateral forums, but under pressure. Before the Brazil stopped signing a joint statement by 50 countries denouncing Ortega’s regime’s crimes against humanity. Then, separately, he told the UN Human Rights Council that the situation was characterized by serious violations and it offered shelter to dissidents who lost their citizenship on Ortega’s orders.
Pope Francis asks Lula for mediation
During an official visit to Pope Francis at the Vatican, Lula said he would try to mediate relations between the Catholic Church and Daniel Ortega’s regime.. Lula specified that she will speak with Ortega about the arrest of the bishop of Matagalpa, Rolando Alvarez, who is under house arrest and was sentenced to 26 years by the Sandinista regime.
“The Church has a problem in Nicaragua, because it has a bishop in prison. The only thing the Church wants is for Nicaragua to release the bishop to come to Italy. There is no reason to prevent the bishop from exercising his functions in the Church. There is no such possibility. I will try to help if I can help,” Lula said, at a press conference in Italy.
The bishop is the main name of the Catholic Church affected by the restrictions on freedom imposed by the government of Nicaragua, in a resurgence of the regime. Accused of treason, the cleric refused to leave the country together with a group of over 200 deported to the United States, including priests and seminarians.
