Memory in the skin
This is news that is a hit on Netflix: the German series Sleeping Dog is the third most watched series on the platform. Created by Christoph Darnstadt, this thriller is an adaptation of the 2016 Israeli TV series Ikaron HaHachlafa (The Principle of Exchange).
A 6-episode mini-series, Sleeping Dog follows the investigation of Mike Atlas (Max Riemelt, seen in Sense8), a dead-end ex-criminal cop who suffers from significant memory loss. An old traumatic incident left him so troubled that he broke down and left his wife Lenny (Perry Baumeister) and daughter on the streets.
When a prisoner connected to the case ends up in a cell, dark secrets are revealed. But these new revelations will allow Mike to find his memories and find out how he got there.
He is assisted by Jules Andergast (Louise von Fink), an ambitious young prosecutor who tries to do what is right when he learns that there is a great conspiracy at the heart of the police establishment.
It remains to be seen if the highest level of justice is also involved and if other criminal cases are connected to what turned Mike’s life upside down. Because his downfall is one of the devastating consequences of crime, which also affects former colleagues and certain high-ranking officials in the justice system.
An effective thriller based on a well-crafted screenplay full of twists and turns, Sleeping Dog has quickly won over Netflix subscribers as it has already climbed to the top of the platform’s views. With a breathless pace, a fascinating plot, a good dose of violence and complex and tortured characters, this German mini-series is perfect for an evening of binge-watching.
