Businessman Rodrigo Sales traveled from Juiz de Fora to Niterói, from where he set out on the high seas and spent 24 hours fishing
Even far from the sea, the businessman from Minas Gerais Rodrigo Sales, 43, has developed a love of fishing. As a child he fished in rivers with his father. Today he travels hundreds of kilometers to tackle a good catch. Last Friday, the 23rd, Sales accomplished the greatest feat of his career: caught a tuna of 160 kg in Santos basin.
To accomplish this feat, Sales had to undertake a 15-hour high sea voyage from Niterói, in Rio de Janeiro, to reach the so-called Pre-Salt layer, approximately 200 km from the coast. Once there, it was 24 hours just to fish. “You can sleep, there’s beds for everyone. But then when the fishing opens, it’s a 24-hour fishing trip, you really spend 24 hours fishing,” he said. Earth.
Sales decided to buy all the necessary equipment instead of renting it and spent around R$11,000 on that part alone, including rods, lures and reels.
He left Juiz de Fora, the city where he lives, in a pickup truck with two refrigerators, but he had no idea he’d come back with such a big fish. He had to make the return journey with the animal’s tail escaping the vehicle.

It took four people to remove the giant tuna from the car. “But we didn’t take it off the ground, it was dragging,” recalls the entrepreneur.
The tuna was shared by Sales among friends, family and employees of the supermarket he owns. “Everyone will take home a piece of fish,” she said.
Is it the biggest fish ever caught in Brazil?
The sales made the rounds through the Golden Rei Pescarias company. Before him, the biggest fish ever caught in the four years of the company’s high seas operation was 86.7 kg. Reaching triple digits, in itself, was already a great achievement. But at 160kg, Sales may have broken a sport fishing record.

According to Lanine Fallante, owner of Golden Rei Pescarias, the largest fish she knows to have been caught for sport in Brazil weighed 133 kg and had been caught in Bahia.
“It’s not common to catch fish in the 3-digit range. It’s every angler’s dream. In fact, Rodrigo landed a new catch, because it was the record,” he said. The entrepreneur will be able to resume the tour, which costs R$ 3,500. The return, however, will be for 2024, as Sales already has new fisheries lined up through the end of this year.
