HBO Documentary Films released on Friday (3) the trailer for “Chernobyl: The Lost Tapes,” a new documentary from the channel that will reveal images and interviews of people who experienced what is now known as the worst nuclear accident in history. The series will air on the network’s channel and is expected to arrive on HBO Max (streaming) on June 22.
Directed by Emmy-winning British director James Jones, the production is based on recently discovered archives from 36 years ago (such as footage shot on the spot hours and days after the accident). The series will also detail how the Soviet government downplayed the tragedy, downplaying the facts to the population, the press and the world, including the soldiers themselves who were sent to the scene without knowing the risks or magnitude of the consequences.
On April 26, 1986, reactor 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded after a failure of the machine operators, who did not comply with a safety protocol. The accident caused a huge fire that lasted for days and threw a large amount of radioactive material into the atmosphere. New nuclear reactions also appeared at the site in 2021. Find out more here.
According to information from colliderEstimates indicate that more than 200,000 lives were lost as a direct or indirect consequence of the accident, even though, as the HBO miniseries put it, the official Soviet tally is just 31.
“Chernobyl: The Lost Tapes” is not the channel’s first production on the tragedy. There is also streaming of the 2019 “Chernobyl” series, which shows the events before and during the accident.
