The Sudanese military confirmed on Monday that the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group had seized the main base of a well-equipped police brigade in Khartoum and there were reports of fighting spreading to the state of the Blue Nile, near Ethiopia.
The RSF said it captured dozens of armored vehicles and pickup trucks after it seized the central reserve police headquarters on Sunday, consolidating its position in south Khartoum, where several key military camps are located.
The Army relied on the Central Reserve Police for ground fighting in Khartoum, where it struggled to contain mobile RSF units that quickly spread throughout the city when fighting broke out on 15 April.
The army said in a statement that the Central Reserve police base had been taken after three days of fighting, accusing the RSF of attacking “state institutions”.
Local activists said at least 15 civilians were killed in the fighting and more than 80 were seriously injured.
Also on Monday, residents reported on social media of an attack by the SPLM-N, Sudan’s most powerful rebel group, on the town of Kurmuk in Blue Nile State, bordering Ethiopia.
Reuters was unable to independently verify the information. The UN mission in Sudan said hundreds of civilians had crossed the border into Ethiopia in search of safety amid clashes on the Blue Nile on Sunday and Monday, while others appeared to be heading north to Damazin, the state capital. .
Clashes related to tribal tensions in Blue Nile state left hundreds dead last year.
