Volpi sues San Paolo for non-payment of image rights

Tiago Volpi has filed a lawsuit against San Paolo for non-payment of the installments relating to image rights. Upon termination of his contract with the club in June last year, when he moved to Toluca from Mexico, the goalkeeper agreed with the tricolor board that he would receive more than R$2 million spread over 24 months, but he received payment in just two of them.

San Paolo owes Tiago Volpi exactly R$ 2,238,756.90. In this way the goalkeeper would receive 93,281.91 reais in 24 months starting from January 2023, but only two installments have been paid since then.

As stated in the agreement between the parties, if San Paolo does not pay the amount due within five days of the expiry of the installments, there would be a 10% fine on the jump, in addition to 1% monthly interest.

Thus, São Paulo’s debt to Tiago Volpi became R $ 2,396,059.38. That is, there was an increase of R$ 157,302.48. And this debt will have to be paid in cash.

The club has three days to pay off the debt. If this does not happen, Tiago Volpi’s defense will ask for the seizure of the assets, including the share deriving from the broadcasting rights, one of the main incomes of Brazilian football clubs.

Going through a serious financial crisis, San Paolo has had difficulty paying the image rights of players who are part of the current squad and also of athletes who have already left the club.

Recently, the São Paulo board of directors reached an agreement with the team to pay the overdue installments of the image rights with the proceeds of the matches against Tolima, for Sul-Americana, Palmeiras, for the Brazilian championship, and the one on July 5th, again against Palmeiras, for the quarter-finals of the Copa do Brasil.
