In the aftermath of a celebrity’s death, there is often an avalanche of documentaries focusing on their life and death. Some have family approval, while others are criticized for not being licensed, like the upcoming television documentary about late Van Halen guitarist and rock icon Eddie Van Halen. A documentary by Reelz focusing on his last hours of life has been the subject of close scrutiny by the late musician’s family. His son Wolfgang Van Halen took to social media to slam him with no less than four F-bombs.
It’s only been two years since the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer died of cancer at the age of 67. The Reelz Channel Medical Docuseries Autopsy is to air an episode about his last hours before his death. Young Van Halen took Twitter to let everyone know what he thinks of the unauthorized incident with a series of F bombs. He wrote:
Shit [Reelz Channel], fuck everyone who works on this show and fuck you if you watch it. Fuckin ‘disgusting trying to promote someone dying of cancer. Pathetic and heartless.
Well, that’s how you scold someone! Two years after his father’s death, the wounds are still fresh for Wolfgang Van Halen. The Reelz episode sheds an unauthorized light on the man who was not only his father but also his teammate. For a doctor to talk about such a delicate family matter without the permission of his loved ones seemed to cross the line. Young Van Halen was so furious that he even cursed potential spectators.
Unfortunately, discouraging viewers from watching the TV documentary may have brought more attention to the episode. His post could pique the interest of his followers or Van Halen fans to find out why the young musician was so mad at the network and series of medical investigations. Only time will tell if viewers tune in to learn about the unexpected death of Elder Van Halen. Arousing the interest of viewers for the episode was obviously not the intention of the son of the music legend.
Fortunately, Van Halen’s son has a myriad of tributes from fans and friends to bring back fond memories of his father. Of course, the rock legend wouldn’t be the first (or last) musician to be the subject of an unauthorized documentary (just ask Alanis Morissette and Britney Spears). Hopefully one day the deceased guitarist will receive the authorized documentary or biopic that he deserves. He definitely has a legacy and list of achievements strong enough to earn the star of a legitimate special.
In the meantime, if you want to check out some authoritative rock documentaries, there are some great and great music documentaries about iconic black music artists, including Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner, for you to check out. You can also find out which new and upcoming TV shows will air this summer.
