While millions of viewers no doubt thought their eyes were playing tricks on them at the time, Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon actually swapped desks as a joke for this year’s April Fool’s Day episodes. The change wasn’t permanent, of course, but it gave Jimmy Kimmel a great idea to make everything better Jimmy Kimmel Live!
In a recent interview with Variety For him Podcast of the awards circuitJimmy Kimmel revealed his biggest takeaway when he swapped places with Jimmy Fallon the show tonight. But if you think it was a deeply emotional feeling, it wasn’t exactly. Kimmel said:
Jimmy [Fallon] had some really nice shelves under the desk at The Tonight Show, so I had to build myself some shelves under the desk. I don’t know why we never thought about shelves, but it really was a huge improvement for the series!
It turns out that this two-Jimmy affair has one more advantage, aside from, of course, the hilarity of the exchange itself. Who would have thought that something as simple as hidden shelves could make such an impression on Kimmel after nearly 20 years of hosting her show? It’s probably much more practical to hide coffee mugs, discs, mobile devices, and other fun accessories that hosts regularly handle during episodes.
According to Jimmy Kimmel, the epic April Fool’s joke had been suggested a few years earlier. However, COVID-19 actually put an end to that idea (and Jimmy Kimmel had his encounter with the virus). So think about it: Kimmel may have stumbled upon this office shelving idea years before us. Probably not the greatest damage linked to COVID.
When it became a little safer to travel, Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon decided not only to exchange offices, but to completely change costs: the first flew to the Big Apple, the second a stage under the California sun. Both late night shows drew millions of viewers, so many homes across the country were able to participate in the joke. The two exchanged episodes also included the Red Hot Chili Peppers as musical guests.
Even with so many people involved, Jimmy Kimmel’s team managed to avoid spoiling the surprise. The studio audience was not informed in advance of the change, which sparked a hilarious reaction from viewers on both sides of the United States. Jimmy Kimmel joked that some people often mistake him for Jimmy Fallon, but it was clear that the public knew exactly who was sitting behind the desk on April Fool’s Day.
This cooperation between nighttime talk show hosts may not have been possible just a few years ago. Variety reported that Jimmy Kimmel openly disliked Jay Leno and that competition between hosts made it difficult to find famous guests. Thankfully, the night guest landscape has changed, allowing Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon to put themselves in each other’s shoes. Jimmy Kimmel will also exchange hosting duties with the spectacle of manwith Joe Rogan taking over the place Kimmel occupied years ago.
Jimmy Kimmel Live! now airs weekdays on ABC at 8pm EST, while new episodes of Tonight’s show with Jimmy Fallon are broadcast on NBC. You can view past deliveries from Jimmy Kimmel Live! with your Hulu subscription or check out these upcoming TV releases coming in 2022.
