Actress Gillian Anderson (“The Crown” and “Sex Education”) will star in a new Netflix drama series opposite Lena Headey (“Game of Thrones”). Entitled “The Abandons” (“The Abandoned”, in free translation), the attraction is a western created by Kurt Sutter, known for creating the “Sons of Anarchy” series. The new production explores the aftermath of violence and the secrets of a family struggling to keep their land.
Set in the US state of Oregon in the 1850s, the story follows a group of isolated families trying to fulfill their manifest destiny, an ideology that emerged in the United States in the 19th century. The concept is related to the belief that the United States had a divine mission to expand its territory and values throughout North America.
However, a corrupt force of wealth and power is determined to take the families’ land and force them off it. But as they are pushed to the fringes of society, these people band together to form a new family and fight for ruthless revenge. In this bloody process, the notion of “justice” extends beyond the bounds of the law.
Gillian Anderson takes the role of the antagonist
In the story, Anderson will play Constance, the matriarch of the wealthy Van Ness family. Her character inherited her husband’s mining fortune and managed to double it. Despite the prejudices the women face in the city, Constance uses her money, her charm and her ruthlessness to create a network of political allies. For her, power, wealth and lineage are above all.
It’s important to note that the actress was cast before the writers’ strike, which crippled several productions in Hollywood. Series creator Kurt Sutter also serves as showrunner and executive producer. Also producing are Emmy Grinwis (producer of “The Fall of the House of Usher”), Stephen Surjik (director of “The Umbrella Academy”) and Otto Bathurst (director of “Robin Hood: Inception”).
“The Abandons” has no release date yet.
