Anglican and Catholic leaders will pray together for the first time
King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla, of the United Kingdom, arrived at the Vatican this Thursday morning (23) for a historic visit to Pope Leo XIV.
The two leaders will meet at the Apostolic Palace and then participate in an ecumenical prayer in Latin and English in the Sistine Chapel, the stage of the conclaves that elect the popes.
It will be the first time in almost 500 years, since the Anglican schism, that the heads of the two Churches will pray together, marking another step forward in the Holy See’s commitment to promoting unity between Christian denominations.
Charles III wears a light blue dress, while Camilla adopts a darker tone, adorned with a black veil.
The meeting takes place under strict surveillance and several accesses to St. Peter’s Square, the heart of the Vatican, are closed to the public.
As ruler of the United Kingdom, Charles III is also the head of the Anglican Church, created in 1534 when King Henry VIII broke with the Holy See to increase control over religion in the country, divorce Queen Catherine of Aragon, and marry Anne Boleyn.
Charles, however, is not accompanied by the new Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally, the first woman elected to the position of spiritual leader of the Anglicans, as she will only take office in March 2026. .
