The animation is the studio’s first to feature a female protagonist, who is hiding a big secret: she comes from a family of krakens.

This Thursday (29th) premieres DreamWorks’ new animation, Ruby Marinho – Teenage Monster, which, as the title suggests, features the studio’s first female lead. In the story, Ruby (voiced by Lana Condor) is a teenager who hides a big secret: she comes from a family of krakens. Yes, those gigantic creatures that, according to Norse mythology, live at the bottom of the sea and threaten ships and their crews.




This time the krakens are neither evil nor dangerous. Rather, they’re the protectors of marine life—something Ruby doesn’t even know about in her small town. Despite the girl’s efforts to keep her nature a secret, she one day comes into contact with water and ends up revealing her kraken version of her. Plus, she discovers that her underwater world is being threatened by… a red-haired mermaid! No, this isn’t Disney’s Ariel, but Chelsea (Annie Murphy), a young woman who also pretends to be human.
