“Ultra Violet & Black Scorpion”: The Disney series features a Latin superheroine

In recent years, superhero movies and series have embraced a wider range of ethnic diversity in their choice of protagonists and supporting actors. Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”, for example, not only has an Asian protagonist, it also has a story strongly centered on Eastern culture. The new Disney series “Ultra Violet & Black Scorpion” follows the trend by bringing the story of a family of Mexican origins to the United States.

The comedy follows the adventures of Violet Rodriguez (Scarlett Estevez), a 13-year-old Mexican-American teenager who, after being magically chosen by a mask of luchador (the famous practitioners of Luca free In Mexico), transforms into the heroine Ultra Violet. As the title suggests, she later teams up with another superhero, Black Scorpion, to become a fighter and fight crime.

In CNET’s “I’m So Obsessed” podcast, Venezuelan actress Marianna Burelli, who plays Violet’s mother, Nina Rodríguez, explained why the series opens up new horizons in terms of female representation and inclusion.

“Well, it’s a Latin family. And we have never seen a Latin family like this in a superhero context on TV, “explained the actress.” The fact that we are from Mexico is not the most important part of the program. It has nothing to do with the plot. . We’re telling the story of a family that has that past, but has the same problems as most people. And our superhero is a girl. “

The series marks the Venezuelan actress’s debut in the United States

“Ultra Violet & Black Scorpion” is also Burelli’s US debut. The 39-year-old Venezuelan has extensive experience in theater, film and TV shows in London and Mexico City. In the mainstream industry, she is also known for playing Dr. Natalia Velasco on the Netflix series “Paramedics”.

Created by Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit, authors of “The Addams Family 2: On the Road”, “Ultra Violet & Black Scorpion” will have ten episodes of 22 to 25 minutes. The series showed the first two chapters on Disney Channel last Friday (3), in the United States, and will premiere in Brazil on the Disney + streaming channel, this Wednesday (8).
