Find out why Alan Franco beat the competition from Diego Costa in defence

Alan Franco has been chosen by coach Dorival Júnior to fill the gap left by injured Lucas Beraldo in Saturday’s match against Fluminense in Morumbi for the Brazilian championship. The Argentinian competed with Diego Costa to play alongside Arboleda, but the San Paolo coach preferred not to choose the athlete who was team captain last year.

Alan Franco had already been chosen by Dorival Júnior for last Tuesday’s duel against the Argentinian Tigre for the Copa Sudamericana. Although the Argentine defender has not managed to convince part of the Italian public since his arrival, at least for Dorival Júnior he has lived up to expectations.

“Diego comes from two injuries in a row, he is working hard to get to his best condition. I thought that for that moment it would be important to keep Alan,” commented Dorival Júnior.

Diego Costa missed the San Paolo in the last stretch of 2022 and in the first months of 2023, due to surgery for the removal of a bone fragment in his left knee, which hampered his succession as one of the pillars of the team tricolor under the command of Rogerio Ceni.

“I respect Diego a lot, you know it, I trust him a lot, I know that he will restore normality at any moment. He can return at any moment, everything is a matter of time”, concluded Dorival Junior.

For next Wednesday’s match, against Palmeiras, at 19:30 (Brasilia time), in Morumbi, for the first leg of the Copa do Brasil quarter-finals, the expectation is that São Paulo will keep the defensive duo composed by Arboleda and Alano Franco.
