São Paulo has experienced positive growth of 1.8% and, since 1960, remains the largest city in Brazil
Some of Brazil’s main capitals have lost population, according to data from the 2022 population census released on Wednesday (28). For the first time in history, nine of them decreased in size between 2010 and 2022. The numbers come from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
In this 12-year period, Salvador (BA) was the capital with the greatest loss of inhabitants, with a decrease of 258,000 in 12 years, i.e. 9.6% less. Then, with the greatest percentage drops, come Natal (RN), Belém (PA) and Porto Alegre (RS). They presented a negative change of 6.6%, 6.5% and 5.4%, respectively. Rio de Janeiro, the country’s second largest city, also saw its population decline by 1.7% in the period between the two censuses.
São Paulo, Brazil’s largest city, despite having the lowest variation in population growth in its history, has added another 200,000 inhabitants to the total in these 12 years.

São Paulo has 11,451,245 million inhabitants, which represent 5.6% of the entire Brazilian population, with an average annual growth of 1.81% between 2010 and 2022.
Brazil has 5,568 municipalities (plus Brasília and Fernando de Noronha), 41 of which have more than 500,000 inhabitants – nine are in the state of São Paulo. This band concentrates 58.8 million people. Another 278 cities have between 100,000 and 500,000 residents. Together, they have a population of 56.7 million people. The IBGE census, based on August 1, 2022, a total population for Brazil of 203,062,512.
With the publication of the 2022 census, Brasilia officially becomes the third largest city in the country, with 2.8 million inhabitants, behind only São Paulo (11.4 million) and Rio de Janeiro (6.2 million). However, it did not reach 3 million residents, as expected. pic.twitter.com/AJPOEMRg7I
