Hitting our theaters on Wednesday, June 28, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has no shortage of assets. As is James Mangold’s presence behind the camera. Phoebe Waller-Bridge Reinforcement Ahead. The nostalgia that comes from this fifth opus. Or the digital rejuvenation of Harrison Ford in the opening sequence.
But is the interpreter of the famous archaeologist the only one who has benefited from this technique, to give him a second youth, the time of the segment that takes place during the first three films of Steven Spielberg? Apparently, Mads Mikkelsen, who plays the villain of the story, had the right to do so.
The impression left by the trailers is solidified before the film and its opening sequence. And we caught up with a key stakeholder behind this new Indiana Jones presentation at the Cannes Film Festival: “I don’t know exactly what it is, but not the same technique as for Harrison”Mads Mikkelsen answers.
“They tried makeup, but it made me look like an old woman rather than a young man. So they tried other techniques, but not the same as Harrison. They had a lot to do with him. Pictures of him in Indiana. Jones they could use, I couldn’t, That’s why they used other techniques.”
Mads Mikkelsen (rejuvenated) on the opening stage
No doubt the same one that Disney regularly uses in Marvel movies, on actors like Robert Downey Jr., Michael Douglas or Kurt Russell. Where Harrison Ford’s stunning facelift was made possible thanks to the many unused images from previous games that James Mangold and his team were able to draw on.
“You still have to know that when you’re playing someone that young, you have to do something physically as well.”– says Mads Mikkelsen. “You have to consider that today you don’t move like you did when you were 35 years old. We’ve spent a lot of time on this so you don’t look like you’re 35 and move like an adult.
“And the same thing about the voice: mine isn’t the same as it was twenty years ago. Maybe they have a button to modulate the voice.” Directed by James Mangold, the feature film follows Indiana Jones on the trail of the mysterious Dial of Destiny. And this new adventure seems to have pleased the first audience who came to say goodbye to the role of Harrison Ford.
