Ciro Gomes group threatens Cid with punishment for party infidelity in crack for PDT command

While the current national president tries to maintain control of the party directorate in Ceará, Senator Cid Gomes says he has the majority to replace him at the helm of the acronym in the political cradle of Ferreira Gomes

RIO – The political controversy between the senator Cid Gomes and the former minister Ciro Gomespresidential candidate in 2022, in command of the PDT, takes on new contours with threats of punishment for party infidelity, attempted intervention by the National Executive in the directorate of the PDT in Ceará – the political cradle of the Ferreira Gomes clan – and publicly exposed resentments.

The rift between the Gomes brothers has been going on since last year’s election campaign, when the CID decided to support the president’s candidacy. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and a PDT name aligned with the PT for the Government of Ceará. The division deepened.

This Monday 3, the National Executive of the party unanimously decided (7 to 0), “to evoke the competences of the state executive of Ceará for the national executive”. Basically the group of the current interim president of the party, federal deputy Andre Figueiredo (PDT-CE), linked to Ciro, seeks to maintain leadership of the party by controlling the directorate of Ceará.

“The term is not intervention. Bearing in mind that the spirits are extremely heated, including the convening of a council meeting to remove the executive who has mandated until December 31, the national party leadership has convened a meeting, with the participation of almost all its members, to evoke the powers of the state leadership for the national leadership. It is a way of trying to reduce all the damage that is being caused to the party due to these divisions,” André Figueiredo told the Stadium.

The control of the legends in Ceará is threatened by the group of Senator Cid Gomes. Backed by 52 of the 84 state executive members, Cid has called a meeting for Friday the 7th in an attempt to take control of the party. The senator does not recognize the decision taken by the national executive and says he will hold a “sidewalk meeting” if he is prevented from entering the PDT headquarters.

“In my opinion, the decision does not promote intervention in the state directorate, because Article 67 (used as the basis for the decision of the National Executive of the PDT) deals with the possibility of the Nacional to convene ethical disciplinary processes. It just doesn’t apply to the case. I said this there: ‘Dude, if you have any intention other than invoking an ethical and disciplinary process, which is what it says verbatim, look for another article. Not this’. Anyway, I said the vote was harmless and I would abstain,” Cid Gomes said.

The senator also specified that he will maintain the meeting scheduled for this Friday, even with threats of reprisals for party infidelity by Figueiredo and the Cirò group.

“If there is a quorum, the meeting will take place at the party headquarters. If they don’t let us in, we will do it on the sidewalk, in front of the headquarters,” he said.

Figueiredo, who also presides over the directorate in Ceará, understands that the convening of the assembly violates the party’s statute. And he says he will wait for the outcome to evaluate possible punishments for the people involved.

“We are trying to make the process less traumatic. Senator Cid’s group wants to call a meeting to remove the legally elected and mandated Executive. This is not stipulated anywhere in our charter. Never dismiss an Executive with a mandate. This that’s what’s causing all this fuss. The party won’t recognize that. What we’re seeing, sadly, is something that’s making the party bleed,” he said.

Figueiredo is an ally of Ciro Gomes, who broke up with his brother in 2022. Figueiredo’s tenure is expected to last until the end of the year. However, this period can be shortened if there is the consent of the PDT State Executive members for the change of leadership.

The two sides differ on which position to take in next year’s elections. While the CID seeks a reconciliation with the PT, the Cirista wing, linked to Figueiredo, does not want to open dialogue with the party of governor Elmano de Freitas (PT) and defends the independent re-election of José Sarto (PDT) in the capital.

To try to mediate the matter, the minister Charles Lupi (Social Security), authorized president of the PDT, went to Fortaleza about two weeks ago. In a meeting with some of the members, he demonstrated that he did not want to give up André Figueiredo as president of the acronym until the end of his mandate. The disputes are expected to extend through Friday.

However, State Deputy Osmar Baquit (Pdt), who arrived with the CID at the last meeting, does not see close prospects for an end to the party’s internal crisis. “I don’t see how to get this deal, it’s just about moving forward,” he said.

Split into the Ferreira Gomes clan

The rift between the Gomes brothers started at the last election. At the time, Ciro was frustrated without Cid’s support during the presidential campaign. The break was motivated by the disagreement of Cid, an ally of the senator and former governor of the PT of Ceará Camilo Santana, with his brother’s electoral strategy, which included constant attacks on President Lula.

The public confrontation was even worse with state disputes at the same time. The party was divided between support for then governor Izolda Cela (PDT) and former Fortaleza mayor, Roberto Cláudio (PDT). Ciro Gomes financed Roberto’s candidacy, while brothers Cid and Ivo Gomes remained neutral to avoid a break with the party of former governor Camilo Santana, who supported Izolda’s candidacy.

Despite the history and political divide, Cid says it’s only natural that he and Ciro have different views on certain political paths.

“Two people fight only when they both want to.

Finally, driven by Ciro’s decision, the alliance with the PT that had been in force in Ceará since 2006, the year in which Cid Gomes was elected governor of the state, dissolved. Action still breeds resentment.

Insecurity in PDT

Among the new clashes between the leaders of the PDT, insecurity is almost a consensus among the party’s parliamentarians. Allied with Cid Gomes, federal deputy Eduardo Bismarck (PDT) admitted that many MPs speak of disaffiliation under the acronym “fear of the future”.

“People don’t feel safe because they don’t know tomorrow, especially when it comes to nominations, so they turn to other parties,” Bismarck said.

Behind the scenes there are even rumors of a possible removal of Cid from the party, which he denies. Political scientist Kevan Brandão believes, however, that this will not happen. “Cid is still the consensus name of the PDT, and he is aware of it, so he will continue. But today the Ceará PDT is totally broken,” he assessed.

Despite the Cid’s strength in the state, Brandão believes the party may cease to be Ceará’s largest if José Sarto (PDT) is not re-elected in Fortaleza in next year’s elections. “If it loses the capital in 2024, the PDT tends to go through many difficulties in Ceará and could lose a lot of strength.”
