‘The Boys T3’ has already introduced Soldier Boy, a most twisted Captain America

Jason Ackles’ character is off to a strong start, though his similarities to Patriot could be the key to the series.

There’s a satisfying catharsis to ‘The Boys’ (yes, we’ve seen the Thermite and the penis scene) perversion of classic comic book superheroes. Take Patriot: Superman, but a war criminal who flirts with neo-Nazis. Or the Deep-Aquaman, but as a sexual predator. For the hero-weary, ‘The Boys’ is like a shot of super-soldier serum straight into our cynical veins and, my God, it feels so good.

Season 3 promised to take things even further, with the trailer already alluding to a recent Marvel moment, with Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) playing the role of John Walker (Wyatt Russell), who in ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ ‘ hits an enemy with Captain America’s shield. Of course, in the MCU the moment plays out as a corruption of the character, a stain on Steve Rogers’ good name. In ‘The Boys’ we expect the tone to be completely ironic; There’s no good name to be tarnished when America’s heroes are murderous psychopaths. And now comes the perversion for the most heroic hero of the comic book kingdom: Captain America. Time for the image of him to be ceremoniously dragged through some rough shit.

We’ve met The Boys’ Soldier Boy character before, at least in name. Stan Edgar (Giancarlo Esposito) previously mentioned him as the first hero, something like the “first Avenger”. (That makes Stan Edgar the anti Nick Fury, by the way.) We also know that he is the one responsible for killing Maternal Milk’s (Laz Alonso) family.

In Episode 2 we learn a bit more about this founding Supe through an informative video that clearly parodies the very museum found in the MCU (we’re talking all that Captain America propaganda crap here).

Soldier Boy grew up in the birthplace of American freedom. Born poor on the squalid streets of South Philadelphia, he learned the values of hard work, tenacity, and bravery. He used those values to demonstrate America’s exceptionalism to the world. He defended us against the invading red menace. He helped lead America to a better future, and along the way, he found the love of a good woman. Which made his sacrifice even more noble, when he gave his life saving us from a nuclear holocaust.

Soldier Boy is shown fighting for the Allies in World War II and starting McCarthyism during the Cold War. His death supposedly occurred during the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986. Of course, none of ‘The Boys’ believe this hoax, and soon after we learn that Soldier Boy was killed by an unknown weapon in Central America. Soldier Boy’s latest sighting: Nicaragua, his body was taken away by a Soviet plane after a skirmish between CIA-backed guerrilla soldiers and Russian special forces.

Oh, and all that tenacity, hard work, and love for a good woman… well, it turns out Soldier Boy was really arrogant shit. Big surprise.

    What are Soldier Boy’s powers?

Soldier Boy is often compared to Patriot. He is equally invincible (apparently), turning whatever weapon killed him into a possible tool for our heroes to destroy Patriot. His powers are standard abilities of protagonists in the comic book world: superhuman strength, superhuman speed, and superhuman longevity. He can move as fast, hit as hard, and age as slowly as Patriot. In the comics he can also generate powerful energy blasts.

    Who plays Soldier Boy?

The parody of Captain America is played by Jensen Ackles, whom fans of the genre will know from ‘Supernatural’. He also appeared in another comic book-inspired franchise, Smallville, and two animated Batman movies as a voice actor. ‘The Boys’ showrunner Eric Kripke (who also created ‘Supernatural’), said in an interview with Vanity Fair that he had not considered Ackles when writing the role of Soldier Boy. His casting of Ackles came only after a phone call with the actor, during which Kripke complained about his failed attempts to cast Soldier Boy. Originally, Kripke wanted to cast someone older. Talking to Ackles on the phone, Kripke realized he was talking to the right person.

In an interview earlier this year, Ackles described his octogenarian character.

He is a grandfather. He’s from the ’40s. He Fought in WWII, and he’s just this cranky, bigoted jerk. He doesn’t age so he’s this 40 year old young superhero who’s actually 80 or older. 90 years old. There’s a lot of material in there, you’ll see what I mean when you watch the series, but he has a thing for people who They were of their time.

We’re still not quite sure what this means, but we’ll keep an eye on it. After the broadcast of the first three episodes, ‘The Boys’ will be broadcast weekly every Friday on Amazon Prime Video.
