Sex, drugs and a serial killer on the platform: the adaptation of this shocking book has found its director

Brett Easton Ellis, an author famous for his sharp pen and black vision of America, has a long film history. Many of his novels have already been adapted for the big screen – American Psycho to name just one – but his latest work will be the subject of a TV series.

Les Eclats – or The Shards in the original version – tells the story of Brett, a 17-year-old student in Los Angeles in 1980. As she begins her senior year at the prestigious Buckley High School, she meets a new student, the charismatic Robert Mallory. The latter is secretly connected to a serial killer, and Brett, hypnotized by her beauty, falls into a hellish spiral.

When creator Ryan Murphy became interested in adapting the book for television – Brett Easton Ellis himself rejected the offer – HBO has finally found its candidate: Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name, Bones And All).

This is not the first time the director has worked for HBO. In 2020, he offered the series We Are Who We Are, which followed several teenagers on an Italian military base. For Les Eclats he has to sign every episode.

Very prolific, Luca Guadagnino is about to release his new movie, Challengers, with Zendaya. This sports drama is broadcast on Prime Video in France. He recently finished filming his new feature film, Queer, starring Daniel Craig.
