The list has been prepared on the basis of the average Brazilian consumption, according to the Brazilian Association of Supermarkets
A Brazilian Association of Supermarkets (Abras) prepared a list of products that the entity believes should be part of basic basket national. According to the institution, the selection was based on average consumption throughout the country.
This definition is important because the new text of art Tax reform, under discussion in the National Congress, established that products that fall under this classification will not be taxed. The definition, however, will take place through a Complementary Law and Abras declares its intention to contribute to the elaboration.
The list suggested by Abras has 38 items and ranges from products such as meat (without specifying the cuts), eggs and milk, to items for personal hygiene and cleaning that are not included in the basket today, such as toothpastes, sanitary towels, detergents, powdered soap and bleach.
Currently, each state defines the reduction or exemption of ICMS on products. The body defended a tax-free basic national food basket throughout the country, a request accepted in the new text by rapporteur Aguinaldo Ribeiro.
