‘These aren’t real movies’: Why Mission Impossible 2 director quit Hollywood

After great success in China, in particular with Crime Syndicate and Assassin, director John Woo goes to Hollywood to try his luck. This experience led to major successes, including Volte-Face and Mission: Impossible II.

But in the mid-2000s, after signing on for a feature film, John Woo decided to return to his native country to set up cameras. Why this return to China? Because the Hollywood acting style that was emerging at the time, a more realistic style, no longer suited him, he recently explained. In the microphone of the Vulture site.

“I didn’t like how it was going”John Woo admits. “I couldn’t take it anymore that everyone was doing the same thing, these cameras were constantly moving and it was very fast cutting. Even in dramas, we were shooting handheld scenes. I couldn’t even see the actors’ faces or hear what they were saying or pay attention to their performances. I had a problem with that style.”

“No matter how I saw a movie like this, in the cinema or on DVD, as soon as the camera started shaking, I stopped. I couldn’t stand it”continues the filmmaker. “I don’t think they were real movies. The reason I went to make a Chinese movie is because I was asked to help Chinese movies get better visibility in the world. It’s not that I feel old or anything like that. I don’t like the changes of the time. “

After working in China for two decades and despite all these criticisms, John Woo is back in Hollywood with Silent Night, a feature film directed by Joel Kinnaman that is a remarkable feature. The Hexagon release date is not yet known.
