One of the most important adaptations of Pride and Prejudice in cinema is gripped by some controversy.

This month when Perdida, the Jane Austen adaptation of Carina Rissi’s best seller inspired by Jane Austen, hits Brazilian theaters, it’s a good time to see more of the English author’s reading. One of the artist’s major works, Pride & Prejudice is one of her best known books by her and also most revisited in other media.




Among the films and series based on this author’s work, there are a BBC miniseries and a 2005 Joe Wright film that have remained in the imagination of fans. Between the two there is a dark sign in the feature film starring Keira Knightley as Lizzy Bennet.

The plot takes place in England, in 1797, and accompanies the five Bennet sisters: Elizabeth (Knightley), Jane (Rosamund Pike), Lydia (Jena Malone), Mary (Talulah Riley) and Kitty (Carey Mulligan). Raised by a mother (Brenda Blethyn) fixated on finding husbands who would guarantee her future, Elizabeth differs from the others, as she wants to have a larger life than devoting herself only to her husband, being supported by her father (Donald Sutherland).

When mr. Bingley (Simon Woods), a wealthy bachelor, moves into a nearby mansion, the sisters soon become agitated. Jane soon seems destined to win the heart of her new neighbour, while Elizabeth meets the charming and snobbish Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen). The encounters between Elizabeth and Darcy become more and more constant, even if they always argue.
