The suspects were selling drugs near the correctional facility and possessed a rare collection of items
Three people were arrested in the act on charges of trafficking and association with drug trafficking in Canoas, in the Porto Alegre metropolitan region. During the investigation, prosecutors discovered that the suspects were dealing drugs on land adjacent to the city’s Penal Institute, where about 80 people are serving closed and semi-open prison sentences.
According to the delegate Luciane Bertoletti, during the monitoring, it emerged that subjects in a semi-open regime bought drugs before returning to prison for an overnight stay.
During the approach, the police found a collection of rare banknotes and coins in one of the compartments of the traffic room. Among the approximately 500 items seized were coins more than 100 years old and money from 170 countries, including items from Nazi Germany.
The delegate explained that the collection was cataloged and contained ancient coins, some dating back to 1913, as well as objects with the swastika (Nazi symbol). Although she is not an expert, collecting specialists say the collection can be worth up to R$50,000. It is suspected that these items may have been obtained through theft or robbery and exchanged for drugs at the boca de fuma. Authorities will continue to investigate the origin of the seized items to locate the owner.
The delegate advised that the police were investigating possible reports of robberies or thefts of similar collections, however, so far, nothing has been found.
The investigation started from an anonymous report. Scales, 38 caliber cartridges and materials used to package the drugs were also seized during the operation. The three suspects were taken to the 3rd Police Station and subsequently taken to the prison system.
