Taylor Swift has changed one of her original lyrics for the album re-recording “Speak Now”, re-released this Friday (7/7). The controversial song “Better Than Revenge” had one of her verses changed in the new version of the project. Although the change was already expected, the attitude ended up causing a riot among fans related to the original composition.
The line “She is best known for the things she does on the mattress” was changed to “She was a moth to the flame” “) / Teneva i fimmiferi (“She kept the matches”)”. Over the years, the original line has been singled out for her misogynistic appearance, in which Taylor appears to want to shame a woman for her sexual expression—a message the singer seems to no longer endorse these days.
Originally released in 2010, the song is part of the album written entirely by Taylor on her own in her 18-20s. Now 32, the singer has approached music differently, in line with the principles of sisterhood and female empowerment she has cultivated in recent years.
On the other hand, the change has caused debates on social networks. Over the past few weeks, images have been circulating on the internet revealing the altered lyrics on the physical copies of the album. While some fans defended Taylor’s progressiveness as an adult woman, others argued that the original composition should be preserved.
Alleged inspiration for the song
Although it has never been confirmed, the main rumor surrounding the song is that the lyrics are a message from Taylor to Brazilian actress Camilla Belle. At the time, Taylor’s relationship with Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers had come to an end after just a few months together. A little later, the singer began an affair with Belle, who starred in one of the band’s clips.
In an interview on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show, Taylor revealed that Joe ended the relationship in a 25-second phone call. With the release of “Better Than Revenge,” Belle received several hate attacks from fans of the singer, who claimed that they had her boyfriend “stole” from the actress in the lyrics of the song. Despite this, none of those involved have commented on the rumours, and changing the verse appears to be Taylor’s way of proving that they are “water under the bridge”.
Over the years, despite notable female rivalry being emphasized in the lyrics, many fans have grown fond of the song. While many understand the lyric change, others have taken to social media to express their indignation and “mourning” for the playfully altered lyrics. Check out the memes:
