Privacy: how to delete discussions without losing Instagram

Meta does not allow you to delete your Threads account without deleting your Instagram. But you can work around it

If you’ve started using the Threads platform and, like most people, found it lacking and you’re concerned about the security of your personal data, be prepared for an unpleasant surprise: you can’t delete your Threads profile without also deleting yours. Instagram accounts.

Meta wants to “bind” the user to his social Threads by connecting everything to Instagram. The problem is that, like Facebook and Instagram itself, the new platform carries the Meta “tradition” of not respecting users’ privacy. In fact, Threads has already been dubbed the “Privacy Nightmare” on the Internet (Google it and see the result).

If the security of your personal data is a concern for you, there are ways around the application of Meta to impose your social network on Instagram users. There are ways you can leave threads without necessarily saying goodbye to Instagram

Manually delete the content

If you don’t want your content and data exposed online, you’ll need to go in and manually delete anything you’ve previously shared, post by post, from the three-dot menu option in the corner.

This way, the content will not be publicly available and will not be linked anywhere. Remove all personal information from your bio and make sure you also remove all your followers by deleting them from your list.

Make your profile private

If you don’t want to do all that manual work but still want to get rid of your public posts, the best option is to make your profile private. From there, you can remove all followers or keep it just for a close friends list.

To do this, tap the button Menu from profile and go to Privacy > Private profile and tap the OK button.

Deactivate your profile

If you really don’t want to appear on Threads, you will need to deactivate your account. This doesn’t erase any of your data – it will still be on Meta’s servers, ready to be “used”. But at least it won’t be publicly available, and your profile won’t appear in search results or mention in conversations.

You can recover your account at any time by simply logging back in. If Threads adds the option to actually delete your profile, you’ll be able to come back for the final shot.

To deactivate, tap the button Menu from profile and go to Account > Deactivate Profile > Deactivate Thread Profile.

Delete everything, even Instagram

If you can’t take Meta anymore and you are really worried about the security of your personal data, then you can get rid of your entire Instagram profile. By doing so, the company will be forced to delete all your data from its servers, also deleting it from public archives.

In the Instagram app, go to Settings > Account Center > Personal Details > Properties AND Account Control > Deactivation OR Exclusion. Here, choose the account you want to delete, click Delete Account and then Continue.

If you’re using Instagram on the web through a browser, use cancel your account to start the process.
