Luis Suárez Miramontes, idol of Barcelona and Inter, died this Sunday at the age of 88. The death of the only Spanish-born footballer to win a Ballon d’Or was confirmed by both clubs in the morning.

The former midfielder won the trophy for Barça in 1960 when he helped the club win the Copa del Rey alongside Brazilian Evaristo de Macedo. The following year he moved to Inter after seven years with the Catalans.
It was in Italy that Luis Suárez enjoyed his most successful era, with three Italian league titles and two Champions League titles. The Spaniard played for the team until 1970, when the team was nicknamed “Grande Inter”.
“A unique talent and a great Inter fan. The number 10 of the Grande Inter who brought our colors to the roof of Italy, Europe and the world. If you don’t know what to do, give the ball to Suárez. Goodbye , Luisito,” the club wrote in a statement.
More than 50 years after the victory, Luis Suárez remains the only Spaniard to win the Ballon d’Or. Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano also won the award, but the former forward was born in Argentina and became a naturalized Spaniard after playing in the country.
