Palmeiras equalized with Boca and greeted the Libertadores Sub-20 undefeated

Palmeiras tries, but fails to come back against Boca Juniors, from Argentina, and is eliminated from the Copa Libertadores Under 20. This Sunday (7/9), the team was two goals down and reached the score of 2-2, but only the comeback would have confirmed the position in the standings for Alviverde’s first participation in the tournament.

The Argentinians went into the break to win 1-0 thanks to Maurício Benítez’s 11th-minute strike from outside the box. The situation worsened for the Brazilians when Nahuel Génez scored nine minutes into the second half. The reaction occurred with Thalys and Estevão, at 39 and 41 minutes respectively.

However, after the equalizing goal, Verdão had no more clear chances to score at the Francisco Sánchez Rumoroso Stadium, in Coquimbo, Chile.

As a result, Palmeiras finished second in Group C, with five points from three matches. And he undefeatedly says goodbye to the competition. Boca, with seven points, secured their place in the next stage.

According to the regulations, the winners of each of the three groups, plus the best runner-up, advance to the knockout stage. Thus, the deputy leaders of the other two groups (Caracas and Cerro Porteño) scored higher than Palmeiras.

The only Brazilian to win the Sub-20 Libertadores was São Paulo. Verdão, therefore, remains to focus attention on the Brazilian’s quarterfinals in the category, against Botafogo. The teams will face off on July 21 and 25.
