The Hollywood strike needs to be confirmed in the next few hours

The latest round of negotiations between the Hollywood Actors Union (SAG-AFTRA) and major studio representatives (AMPTP) ended without a deal. The information comes from Variety, which highlighted that the contract between the parties officially expired early this Thursday (13). With that, the strike announcement is only a matter of time.

In an official statement, SAG-AFTRA revealed that the negotiating committee unanimously approved the strike recommendation. The union council must meet to formalize the stop in the next few hours.

Fran Drescher, president of the actors’ union, said the studios responded “in an abusive and disrespectful way” to the category’s requests.

“SAG-AFTRA negotiated in good faith. We were eager to reach an agreement that sufficiently addressed the needs of the actors, but the responses of the AMPTP to the most important proposals that we brought to the table were offensive and disrespectful to our massive contribution to this sector. The studios have refused to meaningfully address some topics and in others have simply blocked our proposals. Until they’re ready to negotiate in good faith, we can’t even begin to think about a deal.”

The AMPTP released an official statement saying it was “deeply disappointed by the union’s decision to withdraw from discussions”.

“This is SAG’s choice, not ours. In doing so, the union rejected the historic proposals we brought to the table, including salary, residual and pension increases, expanded health plans offered by studios, protections for actors in the casting process, reduced contract periods for television series as well as a bold regulation on the use of artificial intelligence to reproduce the look of the interpreters. Rather than continue negotiations from that point, SAG-AFTRA has set us on a path that will only add to the financial hardship of thousands of people who need our industry to put food on the table.”
