Bird Box Barcelona presents a new look at the franchise with religion and antagonism [REVIEW]

Starring Mario Casas, Bird Box Barcelona maintains the quality of the original film with new elements

With the success of bird boxfilm starring Sandra Bullock released on December 14, 2018, Netflix didn’t take long to expand production based on Bird Box (2014), book written by josh malerman. This Friday, the 14th, streaming launches Bird Box Barcelonaresponsible for presenting a new look at the franchise (pardon the pun) with religion and antagonism dynamics.

Unlike the first film, Barcelona is not based on a book, but malerman is credited as one of the screenwriters alongside the directors david pastor It is Alex Pastor. The cast has Mario Casas (Sebastian), Georgina Campbell (Claire), Diego Calva (octavio), Naila Schuberth (Sofia), Alejandra Howard (Anna), Leonardo Sbaraglia (Father Esteban), between others.

From the producers of the global phenomenon bird boxcome here bird boxbarcelona, an expansion of the film’s universe that conquered audiences in 2018. After a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, Sebastian must face a journey of survival through the desolate streets of Barcelona. But as they team up with other survivors in search of safety, they discover an even more sinister threat that just keeps on growing.,” says the synopsis

The film manages to have its own aesthetic and differentiate itself a lot from the bird box original. With the good photography and direction, it is possible to see the horror elements presented earlier, but the structure of the narrative takes some alternative paths in relation to the first film.

Of course, this difference is greatly helped by a group presented, a kind of sect, which has a very different relationship with the creatures that helped to decimate society as we know it and cause a real apocalypse.

The beginning of the narrative is quite strong, mainly subverting expectations with a lot of unpredictability, but it seems that this is lost a little and the film becomes more and more predictable when it reaches the middle to the end.

In addition to this group, the protagonist is a very interesting character. As much as he has questionable attitudes, the film presents, with flashbacksthe reason why he is in this situation – with emphasis on the performance of Mario Casas.

Speaking of acting, a good part of the cast manages to deliver the drama proposed by the apocalypse, especially the supporting characters played by Georgina Campbell It is Alejandra Howard.

In addition to the new atmospheres and conditions presented by Bird Box Barcelonathe protagonist, Sebastian, interacts with a large number of characters, more specifically with two distinct groups of survivors. However, there is a great discussion about religion and how it can have two extremes, either currently or in an apocalyptic situation – and this makes for an interesting reflection.

However, while this brings a nice dynamic to the narrative, you end up not caring about most of these secondary characters. That is, when one of them dies, the dramatic weight ends without impact.

Even with these shortcomings, the viewing experience Bird Box Barcelona is not compromised at any time. It’s pretty cool to see the franchise expanding, especially as the new film has its own aesthetic beyond the streets of Barcelona.
