Jimmy Kimmel has been around long enough to see his competition grow from David Letterman and Jay Leno to Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon. He’s also seen the late-night club shift from being super competitive to being much friendlier among TV hosts. (This notion was cemented by his April Fool exchange with Fallon this year.) But there’s a chance his role in that dynamic won’t last long, based on the honest thoughts he shared about his. late night future on ABC.
The veteran TV personality has spoken Variety about his future in night space. Right now, Jimmy Kimmel Live! prepares for its 20th anniversary, a milestone for the animator of the same name and his colleagues. However, he only has one year left on his contract with ABC and, as regards the future, he thinks “a lot” about what could happen:
I would like to know what he was about to do. There are times when I say, ‘I can’t take it anymore.’ And I have moments when I say, ‘What am I going to do with my life if I don’t do it anymore?’ It is a very complicated thing. And there are practical considerations, considerations about family and friends, and considerations about colleagues. And eventually, I’ll have to stop doing it. I won’t do it forever. I wouldn’t be honest at all if I said I’ve made up my mind one way or another. I think about it a lot though.
There’s certainly nothing wrong with the night host weighing his options before making a final decision about the future of his long-running show. Of course, he knows there are a number of variables to consider here. While it may be featured, there is also a village of writers and crew members who depend on the talk show for work. Of course, the star also has to think about what’s best for her own family.
You can’t really blame him if he decides to hang him next year. Viewers have heard former nighttime entertainers like Conan O’Brien and David Letterman talk about the harsh nature of nighttime entertainment. Being the headliner of a night show is not something a person can do for life. That said, the next question would be what would Jimmy Kimmel do after his hosting period ends?
If he decides to renew his contract, he might try to host the Oscars again (although he called the job a “nightmare”). Or he could continue hosting elsewhere, as the comedian could create a new platform in which to provide more views on current affairs, politics and Hollywood. He could follow Letterman and Jon Stewart into the broadcast space or undertake projects both on and off the camera like Conan O’Brien. There is also, and this is far from true, the possibility of creating a modern version of it the spectacle of man. So whether he stays at ABC or leaves, the world is always his.
