Jump off a cliff on a motorcycle? Tom Cruise does. Speeding through the streets of Rome while driving with one hand? The same. fly at any speed? also. And the fight on the roof of the Orient-Express in the crazy finale of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning?
True, the question may arise, because it is obvious that the elements were added in post-production (barriers or tunnels). Especially since Tom Cruise did his stunts on a studio-built replica of the Eurostar for the first Mission: Impossible, which this episode nicely highlights.
As has happened several times before with a Christopher McQuarrie film, it is the development that gives us the answer to the question. And he’s positive: Yes, Tom Cruise and Esai Morales (and Pom Klementieff) put up a good fight, tightly bonded, on the roof of a train running at nearly 100km/h. But not the real Orient-Express.
Tom Cruise and Esai Morales on set
“There were no extra trains to break up”says Christopher McQuarrie in the video. “We had to build it if we were going to destroy it. Filming the sequence was a real challenge. Not just in execution, because we also had to create different carriages that could run on real tracks.”
If some digital tricks come to decorate this sequence (especially in its last part, which still remains spectacular), there is a desire to limit them as much as possible. And he ends up in this wreck of a locomotive that was really thrown off the top of a cliff.
“Each camera was only allowed one shot”, explains Christopher McQuarrie, as the video shows different angles on the screen. Mission accomplished for the directors and their teams… who are no doubt preparing us for even more impressive scenes in Episode 8, which is currently expected on June 26, 2024 in France.
