New on Netflix: Spanish version of one of the most watched movies on the platform

After a mysterious force destroys the world’s population, Sebastian must try to survive in the deserted streets of Barcelona. As he forms a makeshift alliance with other survivors to escape the city, an even darker threat looms.

He is a Spanish actor who has filmed a lot for Netflix: after Chez moi and Innocent, Mario Casas is the headliner at Bird Box Barcelona. He plays Sebastian, a father who is traveling with his daughter, and responds in particular to Georgina Campbell, which Black Mirror fans will surely recognize as she played in “Hang the DJ” (Season 4, Episode 4).

Is it worth seeing?

Bird Box, released in December 2018, was a hit and started a tradition of winter blockbusters on Netflix. Five years after its release, the film directed by Sandra Bullock is posted 4th position of the most viewed original productions on the platform.

While a sequel was under discussion for a while, finally, in the form of a spin-off, Bird Box has made a big return to our screens. As its name suggests, it is set in Spain and this time follows a father and his daughter as they try to survive in a devastated world. Out of the forest of the first feature film, this time they develop in a ruined city. In terms of special effects, we logically go higher and it shows on the screen.

A change of venue and therefore a change of team (Susan Bier leaves her place to director duo David Pastor/Àlex Pastor), but the promise remains the same. And they had a lot to do with the world of Bird Box, especially since the first movie didn’t answer any of the questions: Who are these creatures? what do they look like How to get rid of it? If you’ve been waiting for answers with Barcelona, ​​you can go your own way. The spin-off is a real disappointment in this area. Other than the last few moments that suggest a sequel is possible, the film doesn’t give us any information.

And this is not the only mistake. Despite a small twist that is quite well seen in the first twenty minutes, Pastor’s script with its lack of originality and tension cannot be stopped. With their Bird Box Barcelona they wanted to talk about (blind) faith, prophets and religious mission. A subject that could be interesting, if it had been developed more effectively… only the emotion remains, sometimes relevant.

Bird Box is not a post-apocalyptic movie that will impress, but it will probably appeal to Netflix subscribers looking for a good evening of entertainment. Be warned, it is not recommended for children under 16 due to violent scenes.
