Deaf people will be able to use an app to ask Samu for help in Porto Alegre

Communicating with the emergency service via short messages will help those who are in a dangerous situation and unable, due to a physical condition, to make telephone calls.

If asking for help from the Capital’s Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) was already a great difficulty for the deaf, the reality from now on is different. The municipal health department, through Samu Porto Alegre, is promoting an update in the Chamar 192 application, which can now also be accessed by this public in case of an emergency.

The municipality of Porto Alegre was a pioneer in establishing the emergency system in Brazil, almost 28 years ago, based on the French model of pre-hospital care. The app has been available for mobile phones with Android or iOS since 2021 and is another way to speed up the rescue of accident victims or other calls.

Communicating with the emergency service via short messages will help those who are in a dangerous situation and unable, due to a physical condition, to make telephone calls. The service must respond immediately to the request, informing and guiding the requester even through short messages.

The coordinator of Samu in Porto Alegre, Fabiano Barrionuevo, explains that there is the possibility of transmitting images in the place of the event. “With the pre-registration of the applicant, the loading of data such as name and address is automatic in our system, thus speeding up the service. in any intercurrent without asking for help from others”.

After downloading the application, the person must register by communicating the requested data and be hearing impaired. Click here to see how this new feature works.

Main phases of the service via 192 – First aid: the operator asks for the place of the accident. The call is forwarded to the attending physician, who requests information from the citizen on the situation and defines the support that, if necessary, will be forwarded to the scene of the accident. Then we move on to the initial treatment and resolution of the problem, with referral to emergency rooms, emergencies and hospital emergencies. Average time varies based on severity, location, traffic or crew availability, but more severe cases such as cardiac arrest average 15 minutes from general guidelines and unit travel Mobile (ambulance) for on-site assistance.
