Actors’ strike: Union rejects Disney CEO’s speech: ‘alienated’

After Disney CEO Bob Iger commented on the current actors and writers strike saying that the expectation of professionals “it’s not realistic”, Fran Drescher, president of the Hollywood Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA), countered by noting that the executive “they have no idea what is really happening to the workers”.

Iger said in an interview with CNBC that the shutdown was unrealistic and “unsettling”, given that the cinema market is still recovering from the covid-19 pandemic, being “this is the worst time in the world to increase this disruption”. In response via Variety, the union leader put the statements like “disgusting and alienated”.

If I was part of the company, I’d lock him up and not let him talk to anyone about this because it’s so obvious he has no idea what’s really going on with the dedicated workers who don’t make anywhere near the salary he does. Seven, eight big digits. That’s a lot of money they make, and they don’t care if they’re medieval land barons.

Fran Drescher, president of the Hollywood Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA), tells Variety.

In addition to Drescher, other names spoke out against the CEO’s speech on Twitter. Actor John Cusack (from 1408, Identity, Deadly connection AND The jury), for example, said that studio greed is “a legendary comic trope” – basically a cliché.

Hollywood actors haven’t gone on strike since the 1980s. Even a campaign among screenwriters hasn’t been seen since the 1960s.

With the strikes, several productions are affected. It is the case of dead pool 3, which had its filming halted this week. Apart from him, other series and films from different studios were also put on hold. Find out more here!
