Known for bringing the Marvel superhero Spider-Man to life, Tom Holland is receiving a lot of praise and criticism on social media for his performance in the series ‘Entre Estranhos’ (‘The Crowded Room’).
In the production, the 27-year-old actor plays the character Danny Sullivan, who suffers from multiple personality disorder. In the scene, which went viral on the internet this Saturday 15th, Danny has sex with another man while living his feminine personality of Ariana.
As expected, the controversial scene prompted both criticism and praise for Tom Holland’s performance. On the one hand, fans point out how the star has evolved and become versatile in her roles, far beyond a young heartthrob. On the other hand, others were annoyed by the interpretation, saying it ruined Spider-Man.
Interestingly, users also highlighted the homosexual roles played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, two actors who also played Teioso in theaters. The first staged a night of love with book publisher Terry Crabtree (Robert Downey Jr.) in the film “Wonder Boys” (2000). The second played a Jewish and gay boy torn between his faith and his sexuality in the play “Angels in America”, which premiered in 2017.
While actors have played gay characters in productions outside of Marvel, within the studio diversity is still scarce in super productions. Just remember that the first publicly gay character in the MCU was Phastos, in “Eternals” (2021).
In addition to the LGBTQIAPN+ theme, Twitter users have highlighted similarities between the character of Tom Holland and Rue, played by Zendaya in the series “Euphoria” (2017). In the plot, the actress (who in real life lives in a love story with Holland) plays a person addicted to drugs and who faces a series of challenges related to the subject.
