‘Kentucky’s Great Treasure’ Was Discovered On A Farm Earlier This Year And Could Be Worth Millions Of Dollars
A hoard of more than 700 Civil War-era gold coins found buried in a Kentucky cornfield is up for sale and is expected to fetch millions of dollars.
The “Great Kentucky Treasure” was discovered on a farm earlier this year, according to the company that graded the coins and the company that sells them.
The exact location of the find and the identity of the person who found the coins have not been disclosed.
According to the company, the coins date from 1840 to 1863 and include gold $1, $10 and $20 coins.
Among them are 18 gold Liberty $20 coins minted in 1863 in Philadelphia. It is a material considered rare.
Second GovMint.com, each reaching six-figure values among collectors. “The importance of this find cannot be overstated,” said Jeff Garrett, a coin dealer who was contacted by the man who found the hoard several months ago.
“The staggering 700+ gold pieces represent a virtual time capsule of Civil War-era currency,” Garrett said in a statement.
Kentucky adopted a neutral position during the 1861-1865 Civil War between the slave-holding South and North, but eventually became embroiled in the conflict.
“Kentucky’s great hoard may have been the result of this conflict, with coins lost for over 150 years,” said the Numismatic Guaranty Company, which certified the hoard’s authenticity. /AFP
