Marvel comics explain SHIELD’s past with several real-world geniuses like Michelangelo, Newton, Tesla, and more
The science inside wonder it is often explored as if it were a superpower and even has a concept that brings it closer to magic. While DC tells stories of gods learning to have a heart and generosity with humanity, Casa das Ideias is betting on how the union and intellect of the beings of the Earth can overcome cosmic entities of any size.

One of the great examples of this is the comic book series called SHIELDwhich narrates the origin of the Brotherhood of SHIELD, formed by historical geniuses in a secret society capable of overthrowing a Celestial with a simple mathematical equation.
Though our world is young in Marvel’s planetary community, humans have come to be feared and respected throughout the galaxy over the ages. The saga Infinite, showing strategist Captain America wiping out the alien villains and clarifying that the Avengers’ jurisdiction now covers all planets that are in or communicate with our Solar System.
The series SHIELD, written by Jonathan Hickman and drawn by Dustin Weaver, shows how the Earth has gone from being underestimated. The beginning of what would become a group to protect our world from alien invasions involves names like Nicolaus Copernicus, Archimedes, Galileo Galilei, Leonardo da Vinci, Isaac Newton, Michelangelo, Nikola Tesla, Zhang Heng, Nostradamus, among other figures historical. .
When was the Brotherhood of SHIELD born? How did these genes interact in this secret society? How did they kick the Celestials off our planet more than once? And what is the legacy left to SHIELD and the Avengers?

When was the Brotherhood of SHIELD formed?
The Prehistoric Avengers, presented in 2017, revealed the formation of a very ancient team, consisting of Odin, Phoenix, Ghost Rider atop a mammoth, the ancient Iron Fist, among other characters connected to the current Avengers.
History shows that the Celestials have been trying to invade or interfere in the history of our planet for thousands of years; and the group of millennial heroes has assembled precisely to fend off the nosy cosmic entities.
And who happened to do that when the prehistoric Avengers disappeared? Well, the beginning of defining a concept about a group of humans who combine their skills under the guidance of brilliant minds and tireless warriors presents documents that date back to 2620 BC, when the Egyptian civilization prevented a bloodline offensive.
After the defeat of Pharaoh KhasekHemwy Khasekhemui, son of Horus and Set, the Egyptians destroyed the lineage under the leadership of Imotepe, the first philosopher of mankind, who planned the construction of the first pyramids in ancient Egypt. The scenes also mention the participation of the mutant Apocalypse and the first Knight of the Moon.
In the 2nd century, Zhang Heng, a Chinese astronomer, mathematician and inventor who studied earthquakes and invented the first seismograph, already called what Imotepe began as SHIELD. The comic reveals that knowledge of him would have come from a collaboration with a Celestial, in an attempt to have a more peaceful approach with the aliens.
Already in fifteenth-century Florence, SHIELD acquires all the inventiveness of Leonardo da Vinci, who promotes unprecedented scientific progress, building a time machine and developing new technologies. It is worth mentioning that, both in the subtexts and plot details and in the illustrations, there are several references to Aristotle, Archimedes, Copernicus, among others, which would also have contributed to the growth of the SHIELD Brotherhood.
In 16th century Rome, Galileo Galilei builds a laser weapon to destroy Galactus, the devourer of worlds. And so the Brotherhood of S.H.I.E.L.D. flourished even more, especially with Michelangelo taking on the name Eternal Man after mastering immortality, as well as the abilities to manipulate space and time via teleportation; and understanding quantum leaps and parallel universes.
The mistakes of the Brotherhood of SHIELD served as a lesson
The Brotherhood of S.H.I.E.L.D. managed to keep Earth safe by acting in an organized manner, but that’s not to say these wayward geniuses did well once they came together. The secret society realized this best when Isaac Newton came to see Leonardo da Vinci’s powers as a threat to the organization.
Thus, the Brotherhood of SHIELD split into two factions, one led by da Vinci and the other by Newton. By that time, the organization had already established a high-tech base of operations called the Immortal City, built underground in Rome. To ease tensions and try to reach a consensus in a peaceful way, the group created the High Council, formed by the main minds of this secret society in a court.
The differences, then, began to be evaluated after setting out the problems, the opinions of each side and the judgment to vote on the solutions presented by each side – there are references to the Socratic method and Plato’s dialogues.
But the internal friction only increases when Leonid, the character driving the plot, has been revealed as a Deviant – yes, the same race the Eternals hunt. Leonid is the son of Michelangelo and a Deviant; and was later adopted by the Night Machine, a character who later confirmed his identity as a cybernetically implanted Nikola Tesla.
Tesla is a time traveler who could be resurrected, thanks to the knowledge and technology developed by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, and also caused distrust in Newton. Incidentally, Newton is characterized almost as a villain, especially after the story reveals his participation in the invention of a drug capable of delaying aging and prolonging life.
Newton’s solution came through mastery of alchemy, which confirms exactly what I said at the outset about Marvel’s association of science and magic. Newton used this drug to prolong the life of Nostradamus, who was forced to predict the future events of various civilizations while being secretly tortured in a dungeon.
The climax of the plot shows a space creature collected by da Vinci in the Sun, the Star Child. This creature, after being an adult, became a menace to Earth, with powers on the scale of a Celestial. One of the iconic moments in the story is Michelangelo defeating the cosmic entity with only an argument involving a logical challenge.
The Stellar Child is defeated by the mind of Michelangelo, who, even in front of a metallic being with a high data processing capacity, manages to annoy the opponent’s system, by logical discussions of multiple versions of his quoting equations which corrupt the reasoning of the gigantic cosmic machine alive.
With all this beef going on, the Brotherhood of SHIELD’s mistakes served as a lesson for the modern version of the group.
What are the Brotherhood of SHIELD’s connections to current Marvel?
The series shows the origin of several things that are part of SHIELD or the Avengers today. The robotic replicas that serve as disposable copies of agents in highly dangerous missions are the legacy of models idealized by Leonardo da Vinci. These automata have been used several times by Nick Fury and Dum-Dum Dugan and, also in The Avengers – The AvengersCoulson uses one of these to fake his death at Loki’s hands.
Much of the storyline stars Nathaniel Richards and Howard Stark. Yes, they are the parents of Mister Fantastic, the Fantastic Four and Iron Man. They managed to neutralize an intervention by the Night Machine, causing Tesla, resurrected in the past, to alert the Brotherhood of SHIELD about two brilliant minds of the 20th century, capable of rival the geniuses of the secret society.
The foundations of espionage, high-tech development, and even the careful pooling of talent to contain alien invasions were laid by Richards and Stark in what would become the modern foundation of S.H.I.E.L.D. Both founded the Immortal City and recruited Leonid during the Cold War after the death of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.
There are references to the Apocalypse and the Knight of the Moon, as well as the villain Kang in his variant known as the pharaoh Rama-Tut. Iron Man’s armor can be thought of as a combination of Tesla’s Night Machine suit and his father’s teachings. The Infinite Formula, which prolongs Nick Fury’s life, is a diluted version of Newton’s elixir of life.
The plot is very curious because it brings together all these geniuses in a very believable way, also because screenwriter Hickman has done detailed research to collect real events and information gaps in the life of these historical characters.
The end of SHIELD leaves the fates and current status of the protagonists open. Who knows if Marvel and Hickman will give this series another shot, right? That would be nice, also because it is never remembered and, while it was excellent, it had problems with production delays and launches went without too much fanfare and there is not even a decent edition in Brazil – reasons why most most readers do not even know of its existence.
