In the tradition of the classic 1986 action movie, Top Gun: Maverick (2022) also does not show the identity of the main villains. But, after all, why the director Joseph Kosinski chose not to reveal the antagonists?
In an interview with the podcast The Big Picture, Kosinski explained the reason for deciding not to reveal the nationality or names of the villains: because the film is not about geopolitics, it is about the journey of Maverick as a character. Also, keeping the antagonists a secret makes the production timeless.
“It’s about friendship, it’s about sacrifice. It’s not about geopolitics. It never was. Even though the first movie was made in the heart of the ’80s, the enemy in that movie was also kind of faceless and nameless. We wanted the focus to be a character-based story about Maverick dealing with all these relationships,” said the director.
Kosinski He added: “We designed the mission with nameless and faceless power and I’m glad we did because the world is changing every year. We shot this movie in 2018. You could never predict what the state of the world would be like today. I want this to be a movie that people watch 10 or 20 years from now and still be able to enjoy it and not feel like it was a product of the early 2020s. That was our goal.”
