During an interview with letterboxdthe director of the production starring Margot Robbie, Greta Gerwig did a great analysis on the films that were very important for the elaboration of the narrative and even in the direction. There are so many good things in Singing in the Rainbut the dream ballet within the dream ballet is one of the most amazing, beautiful, and completely unhinged things.
The first feature mentioned is another classic: The Wizard of Oz (1939). “[O filme] it does something that I wanted to emulate, which is these amazing sound stages and these painted skies and this feeling of… I mean, ‘authentically artificial,’ which I think is really beautiful and exciting.
We also have beautiful scenery painted horizons [em Barbie]. We performed as they would have done in musicals from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. It was something we kept coming back to. I always love the ending where there’s a ceremonial quality.
Furthermore, the hair Margot Robbie had great inspiration from Genevieve Emerycharacter of Love’s Umbrellas (1964) performed by Catherine Deneuve. Already the plot symphony of paris (1951) has some parallels with Barbie.
“The opening [de Sinfonia de Paris]: he lives in this tiny apartment and everything fits in everything. There was something so satisfying about watching him do his morning routine – it was one of the morning routines I loved,” he explained. Greta Gerwig. “Although the Barbie have a lot more space, I thought, ‘This is a great opening.'”
The aforementioned The Truman Show – The Show of Life was of great importance to the film, especially for filming. As the filmmaker recalled, she called the film’s director, Peter Weirbefore filming and he gave a lot of advice.
He talked to me for a long time about how he shot it and how they made it work. In fact, they filmed outdoors. [sem estar dentro de estĂşdio], but they hung lights, so it looked like it was in a studio. He told me, ‘I don’t suggest that. It was very hot.’
At another point in the conversation, gerwig cited three other films that inspired Barbie: “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown: the way [Pedro AlmodĂłvar] overlaps the colors. 2001 – A Space OdysseyI think we all know why. Fast of Love because of the speed with which they speak.”
