Tom Cruise’s latest work ‘Mission: Impossible – Reckoning Part One’ is showing strength at the box office around the world. Within five days of its release, the film had grossed $235 million (R$1.1 billion) globally.
For those in a hurry:
It’s a powerful performance, especially since it’s the seventh installment in a 27-year-old action franchise.
‘Mission Impossible 7’ costs and profits
The problem is that the film – in which Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) flies down a mountain on his motorcycle (in truth), boarding a speeding train and maneuvering a small car through the busy streets of Rome – it was incredibly expensive.
Due to Covid-19-related starts and shutdowns and other pandemic-era safety measures, Paramount and Skydance spent $291 million (R$1.4 billion) before marketing costs.
So even with Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” due out July 21, “Mission: Impossible 7” must continue to resonate at the global box office for its theatrical run to generate profits.
The good news for the studios is that the ‘Mission: Impossible’ movies have a history of early opening weekends at the box office.
In 2018, ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’, for example, initially grossed US$61 million (R$294 million) in the US and ended up setting a franchise record with US$791 million (R$3. R$8 billion) globally.
Additionally, films from this franchise tend to gross 70% of total ticket sales at the international box office. This will help offset any problems at the US box office, where ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ is currently lagging behind initial projections.
Expectations and frustrations
The seventh film in the series topped the US box office, but fell short of initial expectations.
The film’s performance also left something to be desired in China, where it grossed US$25.4 million (R$122.7 million), 66% less than “Mission: Impossible – Fallout”.
However, elsewhere, the film set new opening records. Among these are:
Other territories with notable grossing were: Korea (R$69 million), France and Taiwan (both R$37 million).
